Marlene L. Stanton-Morefield
A devoted mother, philanthropist, and esteemed businesswoman, passed away at her residence Sunday, February 9, 2025, surrounded by love and family. Born on August 23, 1947, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of James Edward Gibson and OlaMae Gibson (Hamm), both of whom predeceased her.
Marlene’s journey through life was marked by her profound resilience and warmth. A proud graduate of Westinghouse High School, she remained a lifelong "Bulldog," carrying the spirit of her alma mater throughout her life. Marlene first married William "Scar" Stanton, with whom she lovingly raised her son Brian Stanton. After Scar’s passing, she found companionship and love again with William "Bill" Morefield. Together, they shared a deep commitment to each other and to the betterment of their community. Her professional life was equally impactful. Marlene started her career at Giant Eagle Grocery Store, where she rose to the position of manager. Demonstrating a keen business acumen, she later became the owner and operator of Lounge 7101 and DJ's Bar & Grill, ventures she co-owned with her son Brian, reflecting her entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to family enterprise.
Marlene’s community involvement was tireless. She was a lifelong member of Ruth Temple No. 116 and dedicated herself to supporting local institutions that make a difference. Among her most cherished causes were the Homewood YMCA, Thelma Lovette YMCA, and the Women’s Shelter of Pittsburgh, each benefiting from her generosity and advocacy. Her philanthropy extended throughout the Homewood and surrounding communities, where she was a beacon of support and kindness.
Known for her love of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates, Marlene also had a passion for playing slots at the casino, card games like Tonk and Spades, and was an avid reader. Her interests reflected her dynamic personality and zest for life, which was apparent to all who knew her.
Marlene’s legacy is carried on by her husband, William "Bill" Morefield, Sr.; her siblings, Gail Boyd and Linda Gibson; her son, Kenneth Stanton (Michele); her daughter, Ebony Morefield; her son, William Morefield, Jr.; her cherished grandchildren, La Tosha Stanton, Brandon “BD” Dean, Bryant Stanton, Ryan Stanton, Mahogani Arredondo, Jocelyn Tucker, Nicole Fulmore, and Noah Toley; and her beloved great-grandchildren, Solomon Owens, Bryte-Rae Stanton, Bryant Stanton II, and Rayn Stanton. She is also remembered by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who found in her a second mother and a steadfast friend.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, William "Scar" Stanton; her sons, Brian Stanton, Lewis Stanton, and Michael Stanton; and her sister, Carrie "Terry" Gibson. Marlene’s life was a testament to her enduring kindness, entrepreneurial spirit, and undying love for her family and community. Her memory will forever inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and lives she touched.
