Bonnie G. DeLuca (Canning)

Age 77, of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away peacefully, Friday, November 1, 2024. A longtime educator, Bonnie was born to Blanche and John Canning in Brooklyn, NY.

A graduate of Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington, NY (Class of 1964), Bonnie went on to study Speech & Language Pathology at Hofstra University (Class of 1974) and later earned a master’s degree. As an Air Force spouse for many years, Bonnie moved quite a bit and served for 30+ years as a K-8 speech pathologist and special educator in schools in New York, Italy, Texas, Nebraska, Germany, and Ohio. Bonnie was a passionate advocate for her students and impacted many lives throughout her career.

Bonnie loved to travel and instilled that love of exploring the world - by land and sea - in her daughter Kristin. A foodie who enjoyed trying restaurants around town (and the world), she was also a skilled cook who was known for many dishes including her incredible spaghetti carbonara. Bonnie was a reader of mysteries, a lifelong fan of John Denver, loved hot air balloons (they were her classroom décor of choice), and had an impressive collection of snowmen that came out every winter. Bonnie was a complex and opinionated woman who cared deeply for her friends and advocated strongly for causes and people she believed in.

Bonnie is survived by her daughter Kristin DeLuca and was preceded in death by her parents and her brother John.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, her daughter requests donations be made to Special Olympics Pennsylvania, https://specialolympicspa.org, whose mission Bonnie was connected to and supported over the years.
