Dr. William Jenkins Garner

Age 94, died Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at home. Born June 24, 1925 in Pittsburgh, PA to Dr. James Bert Garner of Mellon Institute and Margaret Shay Garner. Graduated Mt Lebanon High School and served in the US Army as a medic with the 8th Armored Div, 36th Tank Battalion, from 1943-1946, beginning with the Battle of the Bulge. After the surrender of Germany, he remained with the Army in Austria serving in a clinic for the local people. Much to his father’s pride, he received 5 medals for patriotism: WWII Victory, European Campaign (Ardennes, Rhine, and Central Europe), Bronze Star, German Occupation, and probably his proudest, Combat Medic Badge. Upon return from the war, he went to University of Pittsburgh and Pitt Medical School. He became a family physician and helped to start the Family and Community Medicine Practice at Shadyside Hospital, where he enjoyed being a mentor to the younger physicians. Practicing medicine for 50 years, mostly in Penn Hills, he retired at age 75. Dr. Garner was a master scuba diver, serving as the dive doctor on many scuba trips, including Bali, Borneo, Indonesia, the Solomon Islands and the Caribbean. Their other adventures included river cruises in Europe, including Russia, and tours to Egypt and China. Gardening, cooking, painting and crafts rounded out their full life. Survived by sister Sally (Gus) Gustafson of Lafayette, Indiana. Beloved father of Ella (Hans) Moravec, Maggie (the late Bob Andrews) Tingleff, Bill (Mary) Garner, Laura (David) Dernar, Anita (Rick) Lohr. Predeceased by the siblings Kaarne and Alan Tingleff. Dr. Garner was married to the late Dorothy Jamison and the late Helen Hewitt, to whom he was married for 50 years. He has 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The family is especially thankful to the faithful and loving care given by Maxine Gaiter and Tammie McBride which made it possible for Dr. Garner to remain at home in his final years.

David G. “Dave” Heinauer

Age 78, of Penn Hills, passed away Monday, July 8, 2019. Beloved husband of Mary Ann; father of Cathleen (the late John) Ritzo, Cheryl (Jor’l) Campbell, David (Irma) Heinauer, Jr., Michelle (Chris) Halleran and Keith (Gina) Heinauer; grandfather of 16; great-grandfather of seven; son of the late Wilbert and Pearl (Bliss) Heinauer; step son of Betty Heinauer; brother of Deborah (Rob) Wensel and Sheila McNamara. Dave was an avid Drag Racer and partner of the car “Mission Impossible”. He had a passion for cars including his 1932 Ford Victoria Street Rod, and a lifelong love of motorcycles. John H. Daily

Age 74, of Penn Hills, passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2019. Beloved husband of Stacey Daily; uncle of Karyn, Kit, Nick, Drew, Kim and Brett. John was a former employee for the Penn Hills public works department and a proud US Air Force veteran. John F. “Johnny B” Balocik

Age 72, of Verona, passed away peacefully Monday, July 1, 2019. Beloved husband of Peggy (Miele) Balocik; father of Bruce Bryan Balocik; brother of Allan Balocik of Florida, Arlene (Jeff) Sparks and the late Frank (surviving spouse Patty) Balocik; also survived by numerous nieces nephews and cousins; John was a proud US Navy Vietnam Veteran.

Janice A. “Bub” (O’Rourke) Chiusano

Of Penn Hills, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at the age of 73.  She was the daughter of the late John and Margaretta “Nan” O’Rourke.  She is survived by her husband of 45 years Joseph J. Chiusano; loving mother of Jill (Shawn) Jones of Kennedy Twp. and Todd (Carrie) Chiusano of Plum Borough, adoring grandmother of Tony Serrao, Spencer Jones, Haley Chiusano and Mike Dincau; sister of Audrey (the late Donald “Herk”) Pritchard and John “Jack” (Shirlene) O’Rourke also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.  She was an avid dog lover and leaves behind her precious doodles Willee and Shelby. Jan was a lifelong resident of Penn Hills and a 1964 PHHS graduate. She was the office manager at Mt. Hope Cemetery for over 40 years where she was devoted to helping families through the difficult loss of their loved ones. She had a kind and gentle spirit and she made a positive impact on everyone she met.
